HABITAT MANAGEMENT: AX, FIRE, COW & PLOW

Getting the Ax

Dr. Dale Rollins, the Texas Quail Guru, talks about four traditional ways to manage habitat and we're trying all four at Long Straw Ranch.

AX: As you'll see in the accompanying photo, we've cut down over 400 Red Cedar trees and hauled them off this year.  The Cedars are not indigenous, and tend to surround our Oaks, drinking all their water (a mature Cedar can suck up 30 gallons of water a day)...

NEW MEMBER OF LONG STRAW TEAM: TONY

Prescribed Burn at LSR

We're proud to welcome Tony, a 3-4 year old English Pointer to the Long Straw team.

Tony came to us through Operation Kindness, the no-kill animal shelter.  My wife (Melinda Branchini) and I were attending a fund raiser for Operation Kindness this spring and Tony was on display along with other very deserving dogs and cats.

HUNTING SEASON IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!

Hunters Afield!

I know it seems early, but it really isn't.

We expect to start hunting at Long Straw in early October, as soon as it's cool enough for the dogs.  We will have quail, of course, and we plan on hosting 4-5 pheasant "tower shoots" this year (we anticipate probably one tower shoot a month starting in November).  We hosted three of these events last season, and they were very well received, so we're going to do more of it...

ANNOUNCEMENTS

For the fall/winter hunting season, we will be initiating a "Pay Pal" system so you can book hunts, make deposits, and pay for hunts electronically.

We are in the process of setting this up now and will have more information by the time of our third newsletter in September.  We will also, by then, have our schedule of Pheasant Tower Shoots established.  Our intent is to feature one each month starting in November - March.  As always, we'll do our best to schedule them around things like opening day (of anything), big football games, etc.

Keep in mind, if the NFL continues the "lockout" we'll have plenty for you to do on those Sundays when they are not "ready for some football".

Hope you are all having a great summer.
